Ian and I tried the saga rules for the first time today, giving my Gripping Beast ansd Wargames factory figures an outing.

Took some time reading through and discussing bedfore we got into the rather different game mechanics, particularly the "battle board" and allocating our dice to the various categories. To be honest we didn't make much use of the special properties. I suspect that would come once the basic activation and movement has sunk in.

As we weren't using the (expensive) specialised Saga D6, but had marked the appropriate D6 scores on the boards the mystique of the Saga dice was exposed percetage analysis.

Once we got the hang of it we raced through three four unit games but now it's time for the re-read of the rules to see what we were doing wrong.

the mechanisms were different enough to make you think about what was actualy going on. We both agreed it felt more like a game you would play a over a pint rather than a "set up" wargame - that is not a criticism.

After having participated in an old west campaign using warhammer rules we were a little dissapointed in the lack of progression for caharacters after the game. We thought it may work well in the context of the old "lamming" style campaign. I would certainly like to try them again.

If, during three games, either of us used any of the special abilities more than once I'd be surprised but it's clearly those that add an extra edge. That's what we have to look at using next time.

We had our first run through last night at our Club, SSWG, and the general opinion was that we will try them again. We stuck to the basics, which seemed quick to grasp, but think there are hidden nuances that need considering.
